What the update delivers, and what it omits

Per the report, the R1 platform was rebuilt to align with the R2 architecture, with the stated objective of a unified core operating system across the lineup. Chief software officer Wassym Bensaid has named that consolidation as the endpoint. Two features remain absent from the new build: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Rivian's stated position, as reported, is that owners will eventually cease requiring either integration. The dispute over what appears on a vehicle's central screen, the report frames, has been treated as a competition matter rather than a design one.

The European hinge

Volkswagen now holds a 15.9% stake in Rivian, the report states, triggered by a $1 billion payment tied to a software-milestone trigger. The two firms operate a joint venture developing a shared vehicle architecture that reaches Europe from 2027 through that partnership, scheduled to surface in the ID. EVERY1 — an entry-level electric car due in 2027, on a platform the group intends to scale toward 30 million vehicles. That integration lands inside a regulatory frame the Bundeskartellamt codified in April of last year: the German authority concluded its case against Google Automotive Services with binding commitments extending across the EU, requiring Maps, Play, and Assistant to be licensed as standalone products, default-setting incentives and advertising-revenue contracts withdrawn, and interoperability with rival services permitted. Italy had previously imposed a $123 million fine on Google over Android Auto for blocking a third-party application from functioning with the system.

What the service bay verifies on arrival

A vehicle arriving with a freshly applied full-stack operating system swap — particularly one crossing hardware generations, as this update does with the legacy R1 cohort — requires gateway fault-code review and battery state-of-health logging before return to service. Infotainment boot sequence and CAN bus stability at the central convenience node are confirmed against manufacturer documentation. If any parameter deviates, the code, freeze-frame data, and battery voltage at detection are documented and escalated via the manufacturer diagnostic portal. No clear command is issued until the deviation is resolved.
