The distinction is operational, not cosmetic. A lower-tier ticket cannot be treated as a partial version of All-Access. If a temporary exhibition is the primary objective, General Admission is the wrong selection. If the visit is focused on SUE the T. rex, Máximo the Titanosaur, ancient Egypt, gems, and the museum’s permanent galleries, the higher tiers may add cost without adding useful access.

The Field Museum is in Chicago’s Museum Campus. Admission conditions vary by residency status, selected pass, date, and exhibition schedule. Ticket availability and displayed rates also change. The structure of the passes is more stable than the numbers attached to them.

The three Field Museum pass options

The Field Museum of Natural History uses three main admission tiers:

The selection should be made from the intended route through the museum, not from the title of the pass alone.

Basic Admission

Basic Admission includes the museum’s 35 permanent exhibitions. The core collection includes Griffin Hall, where SUE the T. rex and Máximo the Titanosaur are displayed, along with Inside Ancient Egypt and the Grainger Hall of Gems. Evolving Planet and other permanent galleries are also part of the base admission structure.

This is the correct ticket when the visit is built around the permanent museum rather than a temporary program. It is also the relevant tier for Illinois Resident Free Days. Free admission on those designated Wednesdays applies to Basic Admission for eligible Illinois residents with valid proof of residency. It does not convert the entire museum into a free-access facility.

The exclusion is precise:

• Ticketed temporary exhibitions are not included.
• 3D movies are not included.
• Access to a special exhibition cannot be assumed because it is located inside the same museum.
• A free Basic Admission does not automatically provide free access to All-Access content.

The permanent collection is large enough to occupy a substantial visit. Basic Admission is not a stripped-down lobby ticket. It is the entry point for the main museum.

Discovery Pass

The Discovery Pass combines General Admission with one additional paid experience. That experience is either:

1. One ticketed special exhibition.

2. One 3D movie.

The choice is not an unlimited add-on. The pass should be selected only after deciding which single extra activity has priority.

This tier has a clear use case. A visitor wants the permanent galleries and one temporary exhibition, but has no requirement to see every ticketed exhibition or a film. Alternatively, the visitor wants the permanent galleries and one 3D production. The Discovery Pass covers either branch, not both as an unrestricted package.

The decision can be expressed as a simple gate:

• If permanent galleries only are required, select Basic Admission.
• If permanent galleries plus one special exhibition are required, select Discovery.
• If permanent galleries plus one 3D movie are required, select Discovery.
• If more than one ticketed temporary exhibition is required, move to All-Access.
• If all ticketed temporary exhibitions and one 3D movie are required, select All-Access.

No broader interpretation is needed.

The Discovery Pass is a single-option expansion. It is not a compact All-Access Pass.

All-Access Pass

The All-Access Pass includes the full Basic Admission collection, all ticketed temporary special exhibitions, and one 3D movie.

It is the correct configuration when the visit has several paid components. The pass removes the need to choose between one temporary exhibition and one film, but it still specifies one 3D movie. Additional conditions may apply to individual programs, so the selected date and exhibition schedule should be checked before purchase.

All-Access is also included with Chicago CityPASS. That does not mean every temporary exhibition at the Field Museum is automatically covered. Special exhibitions can carry separate exclusions. The Pokémon Fossil Museum, for example, is identified as an exhibition that must be purchased separately and is not included with tourist passes such as CityPASS or Go City.

That distinction matters because the phrase All-Access sounds broader than the actual admission rules. In practice, it means all included ticketed temporary exhibitions under the pass structure. It does not override a separate exhibition-specific exclusion.

Chicago, Illinois, and out-of-state admission

Field Museum admission uses different rate tiers for three visitor groups:

• Chicago residents.
• Other Illinois residents.
• Out-of-state guests.

Residency status is not inferred from the booking address or hotel location. A valid proof of eligibility may be required at entry. A visitor staying in Chicago but residing elsewhere should not select a Chicago resident rate. A person living in Illinois outside Chicago should use the Illinois resident category rather than the Chicago resident category.

The practical effect is that the same Field Museum tickets can display different rates depending on the selected residency classification. Exact ticket amounts change and should be read from the current booking interface. The category itself is the first control point.

Chicago resident rates

Chicago residents receive a dedicated rate tier. The eligibility requirement is residency in the city, not simply a visit to it. Documentation should be available when the ticket is used.

A mismatch between the ticket category and the available identification can interrupt entry. The ticket does not replace proof of residency. It only records the selected admission type.

Illinois resident rates

Illinois residents outside Chicago receive their own rate tier. The most significant additional benefit is the designated Illinois Resident Free Days held on Wednesdays.

The free-day condition applies to Basic Admission. It should not be interpreted as a free upgrade to Discovery or All-Access. Ticketed temporary exhibitions and 3D movies remain separate paid components unless the museum states otherwise for a particular date or program.

This produces a common decision error:

• The visitor qualifies for a free Wednesday.
• The visitor assumes the entire museum program is included.
• The visitor arrives expecting a temporary exhibition or film to be covered.
• The selected free admission applies only to the permanent galleries.

The correct approach is to separate the permanent collection from paid programming before arrival.

Out-of-state guests

Visitors from outside Illinois use the guest rate tier. For this group, the main comparison is between the three pass configurations and any multi-attraction bundle being considered.

The most economical choice cannot be calculated from the museum ticket alone if the visitor is already purchasing admission to several Chicago attractions. CityPASS can change the equation because it combines the Field Museum with other major attractions and includes an All-Access Pass for the museum.

When Chicago CityPASS is the better configuration

Chicago CityPASS is relevant when the Field Museum is one element of a broader Chicago itinerary. It includes the Field Museum All-Access Pass along with entry to other major attractions. The stated potential saving is up to 49 percent, but the actual value depends on which included attractions are used.

The calculation should be made against intended admissions, not against the headline percentage.

CityPASS is a rational option if:

• The Field Museum is definitely on the itinerary.
• Several other included Chicago attractions are also planned.
• The All-Access structure is useful rather than excessive.
• The visitor can use the pass within its operating conditions.
• A separate excluded exhibition is not being treated as included.

CityPASS is a poor fit if the visitor wants only the Field Museum. In that case, the individual Field Museum pass has fewer moving parts. A bundle that includes unused attractions is not a discount in practical terms.

Go City may also appear in the comparison. The same exclusion control applies. Neither a tourist bundle nor a city attraction pass should be assumed to include every temporary exhibition. The Pokémon Fossil Museum is specifically outside the coverage of tourist passes such as CityPASS or Go City and requires separate purchase.

A bundle saves money only when its included admissions are actually consumed. The displayed percentage is secondary to the route.

Free days: what is included and what is not

The Field Museum free-day structure is narrow. Designated Wednesdays provide free Basic Admission to Illinois residents who present valid proof of state residency.

Three conditions must align:

1. The date must be one of the designated Wednesdays.

2. The visitor must qualify as an Illinois resident.

3. The visitor must have valid proof of residency.

The benefit applies to permanent exhibitions. It does not automatically include paid temporary exhibitions or 3D movies. Discovery and All-Access components remain separate decisions.

This makes a free day useful for a permanent-gallery visit, particularly when the route includes Griffin Hall, SUE, Máximo, Inside Ancient Egypt, the Grainger Hall of Gems, and Evolving Planet. It is less useful as a strategy for a special-exhibition-heavy itinerary unless the separate exhibition admission is accepted as part of the plan.

The museum’s operating schedule should be checked for the selected date. Free admission does not eliminate capacity controls, exhibition schedules, or any timed-entry conditions shown during booking. The ticketing interface is the final source for the date-specific arrangement.

Temporary exhibitions and date controls

Temporary exhibitions have their own closing dates. A ticket selected around an exhibition deadline should be checked against the actual date of visit, not the date of purchase.

Two current exhibition dates identified in the available information are:

• Pokémon Fossil Museum: through April 11, 2027.
• After the Age of Dinosaurs: through January 3, 2027.

These dates affect pass selection. If the visit occurs after an exhibition closes, the All-Access Pass does not preserve access to it. If the visit occurs before the closing date, the exhibition may still be excluded from a tourist bundle and require separate admission.

The correct sequence is:

1. Identify the exhibition.

2. Confirm that it is running on the planned visit date.

3. Confirm whether it is included in Basic, Discovery, All-Access, CityPASS, or Go City.

4. If it is excluded, purchase the separate exhibition option.

5. Check whether entry requires a selected time or another reservation condition.

An exhibition name appearing on a museum page is not evidence that it is included in every ticket type. Coverage must be mapped to the pass.

3D movie access

3D movies are separate from the permanent galleries. Basic Admission excludes them. Discovery includes one 3D movie as the single additional choice. All-Access includes one 3D movie along with all included temporary exhibitions.

The choice should be made before arrival if the film is a priority. A visitor selecting Discovery for a special exhibition cannot treat the same pass as also covering a 3D movie. One extra component is provided under that tier.

The film schedule is date-specific. A movie can be included in the pass while still requiring a suitable showtime. A pass without a compatible schedule is not a complete itinerary.

How long the visit should be planned

The Field Museum contains 35 permanent exhibitions. A rapid pass through the building and a complete visit are different operating modes.

A short visit should be allocated to a defined group of galleries. For example:

• Griffin Hall for SUE and Máximo.
• Inside Ancient Egypt.
• Grainger Hall of Gems.
• Evolving Planet.
• One selected temporary exhibition, if included.

A broader visit should leave room for transitions, exhibit density, and the time required by major galleries. The permanent collection is not arranged as a single linear corridor. A visitor who starts with a temporary exhibition, adds a 3D movie, and then attempts to cover every permanent gallery can exceed the available day.

The pass should follow the route:

• Core collection only: Basic Admission.
• Core collection plus one scheduled addition: Discovery.
• Core collection plus multiple paid additions: All-Access.
• Field Museum plus several major Chicago attractions: compare CityPASS against individual admissions.

The museum is large enough that pass selection and time planning cannot be separated.

A practical selection sequence

The following sequence prevents most ticket-category errors.

1. Define the primary objective.

If the objective is SUE, Máximo, ancient Egypt, gems, and other permanent galleries, begin with Basic Admission. If a named temporary exhibition is the main reason for visiting, continue to the next step.

2. Count the paid additions.

One special exhibition or one 3D movie points toward Discovery. More than one ticketed temporary exhibition points toward All-Access.

3. Classify residency correctly.

Select Chicago resident, Illinois resident, or out-of-state guest status based on actual residence. Prepare valid documentation where required.

4. Check the Wednesday condition.

Illinois residents may qualify for free Basic Admission on designated Wednesdays. The free-day benefit does not include every paid program.

5. Check exhibition dates.

Confirm that the exhibition will be open on the selected date. Closing dates are hard constraints.

6. Test bundle value.

Compare CityPASS or another multi-attraction option only if the other included attractions are part of the itinerary.

7. Check exclusions.

Do not assume that All-Access, CityPASS, or Go City covers every special exhibition. The Pokémon Fossil Museum is a known separate-purchase case.

8. Confirm the date-specific schedule.

Review opening hours, available entry windows, film times, and any reservation requirements shown for the selected date.

This is a decision tree, not a preference survey. Each condition narrows the valid ticket set.

The most common wrong selections

Several mistakes recur because the pass names are read as marketing labels rather than access rules.

Buying Basic Admission for a special exhibition

Basic Admission covers the permanent galleries. It does not include ticketed temporary exhibitions. If the visit depends on a named exhibition, the correct upgrade must be selected before entry.

Treating Discovery as unlimited access

Discovery adds one choice. It does not provide every temporary exhibition plus a film. The selection is either one ticketed exhibition or one 3D movie.

Assuming All-Access covers excluded programs

All-Access covers the temporary exhibitions included in its rules. An exhibition with a separate exclusion remains separate. Pokémon Fossil Museum is the direct example.

Using a tourist pass without checking the exhibition list

CityPASS includes the Field Museum All-Access Pass, but that does not eliminate exhibition-specific exclusions. Go City requires the same inspection.

Selecting a resident rate without documentation

A lower resident category is conditional. Entry may require proof. The booking selection should match the documentation available at the door.

Assuming free Wednesday means all museum programming is free

The Illinois resident benefit applies to Basic Admission. Temporary exhibitions and 3D movies are not automatically included.

Final parameters for a valid Field Museum ticket choice

A correct Field Museum ticket selection should produce a consistent result across five parameters:

• Admission scope: permanent galleries only, one additional experience, or all included ticketed additions.
• Residency class: Chicago resident, Illinois resident, or out-of-state guest.
• Date validity: the selected exhibitions and programs must operate on the visit date.
• Coverage status: every intended special exhibition must be confirmed as included or separately purchased.
• Schedule compatibility: opening hours, entry conditions, and 3D movie times must support the planned route.

If all five parameters match, the selected tier is technically correct.

Basic Admission is sufficient for the permanent museum. Discovery is the controlled upgrade for one extra experience. All-Access is the correct configuration for a broader ticketed program. CityPASS becomes relevant only when several Chicago attractions are already planned. Free Wednesdays reduce the cost of Basic Admission for eligible Illinois residents, but they do not erase the boundaries between permanent galleries, temporary exhibitions, and 3D movies.

That is the entire logic of Field Museum tickets. The right pass is determined by access requirements, residency, date, and exclusions. Everything else is presentation.
