Volvo EX30 Gains V2L Capability via New Over-the-Air Software Update

Volvo is pushing an over-the-air update to the EX30 that turns its charging port into a power outlet for external gear. According to CarSifu, the rollout is free for both new and existing owners and will reach global markets over the coming weeks. For anyone turning wrenches on these cars or simply living with one, it's the kind of addition that quietly reshapes how we think about the high-voltage system living under the floor.

What the update actually unlocks

The headline feature is Vehicle-to-Load, or V2L — the ability to draw up to 3kW at 16 amps from the traction battery through a separate adapter plugged into the charge port. A coffee machine at the tailgate, a fridge through a power outage, a small angle grinder in the driveway — that's well within reach. A dryer or a welder is not. The catch is that the V2L adapter is sold separately, so the car won't deliver any of this until you have the right hardware in your hand.

V2L sits inside a broader bidirectional charging architecture — the same hardware path that normally pulls current in now also pushes it back out. Volvo is only switching on the V2L side of that equation for the EX30 today, but the same capability is already live on the EX60, and more models are expected to follow.

The mechanical side of the equation

We like to think of this as plumbing. Energy flows from the pack, through the inverter and onboard charging hardware, and out to the charge port — but in reverse of how it normally moves. That means the high-voltage contactors, the cooling loop for the charging electronics, and the battery management system's state-of-charge logic are all now doing something they weren't before. The software cuts V2L output the moment state of charge drops to 20 percent, and that cutoff is a long-term wear decision baked into the code: it protects the lower buffer of the pack from deep, repeated discharge cycles.

If you're working anywhere near that system, the usual rules still apply. The orange cable is live while V2L is active, and the pack isn't going to sleep just because the car is parked and quiet. We treat it like the car is still running.

What to check once it lands

After the OTA finishes installing, open the redesigned settings menu and confirm V2L shows up as available. You'll still need the adapter, and it's worth eyeballing the charge port for moisture or debris before you plug anything in. Owners of 2026 model-year EX30s in Europe will also see Plug & Charge activate at compatible public stations — no app, no card, just plug in and walk away. The new contextual bar and the refreshed settings layout are part of the same release, and they're worth a few minutes of poking around so you know where the controls actually live.

For our side of the bench, the takeaway is simple: the EX30's high-voltage system is no longer just an input device. We need to service it with that in mind.
