Volvo Expands EX90 and EX60 Safety Suite with Real-Time Hazard Alerts

Four new real-time hazard alerts join the existing slip and hazard-light notifications, while Apple CarPlay audio routing receives a long-requested revision. The update, dated August 26, 2026, extends a vehicle-to-vehicle data pipeline Volvo first activated in 2016 and that now reports participation from more than one million vehicles globally.

New alert library

Four hazard conditions are added to the broadcast catalogue:

• Large Animal Alert — triggered when a large animal is detected on or near the carriageway ahead. Relevance concentrates on rural corridors where deer and elk crossings are recurrent.
• Vulnerable Road User Alert — flags pedestrians and cyclists in proximity to the lane edge, addressing a long-standing awareness gap on high-speed arterials.
• Roadwork Alert — signals construction zones before line-of-sight contact is established.
• Accident Ahead Alert — fused from connected Volvo telemetry and traffic management center feeds, identifying collisions downstream.

Each alert is engineered to coexist with the pre-existing Slippery Road Alert and Hazard Light Alert. The expanded library is intended to extend reaction distance — the interval between notification and physical encounter — rather than alter vehicle dynamics directly.

Data routing

Hazard telemetry does not terminate inside the Volvo fleet. Through the European Data for Road Safety ecosystem, signals dispatched by a Volvo's onboard sensor stack are routed to vehicles from competing manufacturers and to national traffic management centers. Cross-brand redistribution defines this release: competitive boundaries are preserved at the product level while safety data is pooled at the infrastructure level.

Åsa Haglund, head of the Volvo Cars Safety Centre, framed the deployment as an extension of the automaker's safety doctrine: every Volvo that broadcasts a hazard expands the preparation window for following traffic, regardless of badge. "Every time a Volvo car shares safety intelligence, it helps other drivers prepare earlier to avoid accidents and feel safer," Haglund said.

Post-install verification

After the OTA completes, the following baselines are confirmed before the vehicle returns to service:

1. Infotainment module displays the four new alert categories under the connected safety settings menu.

2. Telematics control unit reports an active uplink to the Volvo cloud — status indicator green, no DTC logged in the connected safety gateway.

3. Apple CarPlay audio path routes through the updated codec chain. Output is verified via a 1 kHz test tone at −6 dBFS, expecting full-range response without dropouts.

4. No new DTCs stored across the central electronics module following the installation cycle.

If any parameter deviates, the OTA is treated as incomplete. The vehicle is not released until all four conditions clear.
