The Wrong Box Under the Hood

The Atlas rolled into Khamarckus Reynolds, who runs Reynolds Rolling Auto Repair, with a story that smelled wrong before the hood went up. The owner said a previous shop had just replaced the battery, and every red flag on the dash lit up right after. Underneath, Reynolds found an H6 flooded lead-acid battery sitting where the vehicle was designed to run an H6 AGM unit. Those two batteries are not interchangeable in this electrical system. Voltage Starvation and the False Cascade

This is the part worth slowing down on. Modern European and Asian imports run a network of control units that quietly negotiate over a CAN bus. Drop available voltage far enough, and the steering module, the brake module, and the TPMS module all start logging faults at the same moment. None of them are actually broken — they just couldn't finish their handshake before the sag. So the scan tool lights up, and a less patient tech might chase five ghosts across five different systems.

Reynolds did what we should all do: correct the supply first, then look at what was actually left. The correct AGM battery cleaned up most of the noise. What remained was a stubborn low-voltage fault tied to the steering-angle sensor — the component that tells the rack where the wheel is pointing. Without that reference, the electric power steering refuses to assist properly, which is exactly why the wheel felt welded in place.

Recalibrating by Hand

Here is where the workbench earns its keep. Reynolds tried the electronic reset through his Autel scan tool first. It didn't take. So he moved to the manual learn: turn the steering wheel full lock to the left, hold, full lock to the right, hold, then return the wheel to straight ahead. After that sequence, the module relearned its center reference, and the assist came back. "After I manually calibrated that steering angle sensor … we got our power steering back," he said. No parts, no programming subscription, no tow to the dealer — just hands on the wheel and a few minutes of patience.

The takeaway for anyone turning wrenches on these vehicles is straightforward, and worth repeating the next time a stack of codes rolls across your screen. Verify the battery group number, verify the battery chemistry matches what the car was built for, and measure resting voltage before you start chasing module faults. A flooded battery in an AGM-spec electrical system is a quietly expensive mistake, and the symptoms will send you down the wrong road for hours if you don't start at the supply.
