According to a September 4 Tesla AI post reported by 24/7 Wall St., firmware 2026.27.6 carrying FSD Supervised v14.3.9 authorizes the supervised autonomy stack to engage without driver initiation when an imminent collision is detected and Automatic Emergency Braking is projected insufficient. The condition bypasses the conventional FSD engagement gate and converts the supervised stack into a passive-on-demand safety layer. Rollout confirmed by firmware tracker Teslascope on September 8, 2026.

Firmware Payload and Hardware Split

Build 2026.27.6 contains two distinct FSD binaries. AI4/HW4 vehicles — Model 3 Highland, Model Y Juniper, Cybertruck, and Model Y L — receive FSD (Supervised) v14.3.9 with Automatic Collision Evasion. HW3 vehicles in eligible regions receive FSD v14.2 Lite, the first delivery of that version to the legacy hardware tier. The split mirrors Tesla's prior bifurcation of compute capacity; lateral intervention at the v14.3.9 level requires the AI4 inference envelope.

Automatic Collision Evasion is the defining addition. If the perception layer flags imminent impact and AEB braking torque is insufficient, lateral control transfers to the supervised autonomy stack. Driver-initiated FSD engagement is no longer a precondition. Official release notes for 2026.27.6 have not been published. Sibling 2026.27.5 carried the same payload; presence of these features in 2026.27.6 specifically is not yet independently verified.

Field Verification Baseline

Before any ADAS complaint is triaged on a 2026.27.x Tesla, the following parameters must be confirmed:

Open Items and Diagnostic Implications

Trim-level rollout scope remains undisclosed. Whether intervention executes on vehicles that never engaged FSD during prior sessions is stated in the announcement but unconfirmed in operational data. Regulator notification status is not public. Autonomous lateral control without driver-initiated engagement crosses the threshold typically governed by type-approval frameworks; until Tesla publishes the regulatory correspondence, the feature should be treated as a gray-area capability on any non-US-market chassis.

Tesla has transitioned FSD access to monthly subscription only. Active subscriptions reached 1.48 million in Q2 2026, up 56% year over year. The intervention feature exposes the autonomy stack to owners who never opted in — commercially intentional, diagnostically relevant.
